Social Media Hiatus on Ramadhan

Assalamualaikum and Hi,

[written on 25/3/21]

I've been wanting doing this since a long time ago but it's always on and off. For the past few months, a lot of things happened and sometimes it's very suffocating for me to endure. I tried to get off social media by distracting myself, surprisingly it works to help make me feel better and be more productive! However, it didn't last long because I will always go back. The longest I managed to resist is 1 week, I guess? So since Ramadhan is approaching, I wanted to make the most out of it to do things I really want to do. I'll update my Ramadhan here instead of on social media and post it on 1st Syawal. So for these few days till Ramadhan, I will still be on social media at limited time. I hope this will work, because what I love the most are reading, writing and to be productive in life :)

WEEK 1 & 2 [written on 23/4/21]
So first week on Ramadhan, my plan failed, I can't stop scrolling because of FOMO and I always love to tweet. Besides on week 2 I got my period, so I can't read Al-Quran thus I spend most of my time scrolling. My terrible period pain also made me lied down and scroll. From Twitter to FB to IG and then now to Tiktok also. The thing is a lot of scrolling made me felt so tired. It drained my energy and made my eyes tired. Nevertheless, I still keep scrolling. In March and April, I haven't read much also because of this. Now I can fast already, so I'm motivated to do this.

However, we can't give up okay! So I Googled on How to Stop Endless Scrolling on Social Media and below are some times that I found.

  • Set Social Media Time - This one I always tried but failed. This time I want to go a little bit extreme which is can online on weekend only.
  • Delete apps - I can't do this!!! I will opt for log out from all account only
  • Don't Sleep with your phone - I sleep with my phone I just need to put it aside once I got in my bed
  • Turn off Notification - I'm sure this will work!
  • Keep your phone out of sight - I will on working days, since now I have Tablet and Kindle already.

So let's do our best for week 3!!!

WEEK 3 [written on 2/5/21]
My goals are:

  • To complete Al Quran as much as I can this weekend - completed 40%
  • Finish Google Digital Marketing certificate - completed all courses, only left final exam
  • Do planner for May - DONE!!!
  • Start spring cleaning - I cleaned my room and started vacuuming the whole house
For week 3, I uninstalled social media but still look at it on browser. It does help in reducing screen time. Overall I did okay but I have the feelings I should do more! I'm proud of myself for spending 1 hour plus per day to read Quran. Little did I know getting to understand Quran made me love it even more.

I still need improvement in:
Waking up early at 4am - must sleep latest at 11pm
Procrastinating - get things done ASAP
To read and understand Quran more - I improved a lot since last year but still want it to be better and much better
Reduce time on social media - already reduced a lot but must reduce more

    WEEK 4 [written on 19/5/21]
    My goals are:
    • To focus on reading understand Al Quran - done by 50%
    • To start reading books - not done because work quite demanding
As for social media, uninstalled everything so that reduce my screen time a lot.
I start wake up early at 4-5am for tahajjud. Although I'm so sleepy because I work in the morning, I tried to wake up half an hour before sahur.

    WEEK 5 [written on 19/5/21]
On this week I start taking 9 days leave in total to focus on final days of Ramadhan. So my goals are:
    • Focus on finding Lailatul Qadar, reading & understanding Al Quran
    • Fulfil all the unfinished list
For the last 10 days, I managed to wake up early for tahajjud and read Al-Quran in the morning. I did some spring clean too. I'm only able to finish 70% of the Al-Quran but I think it is quite a lot more than last year. I'm grateful that I took long leave to spend time for ibadah.

Overall, this Ramadhan is second best than 2019, almost close to that best, but it's best in terms of spending Ramadhan at home.

I hope after Ramadhan, I will be consistently do ibadah like I did in Ramadhan.

Anyway salam Syawal and stay safe :) Covid cases has reached 6k today, the highest so far. Take care everyone!

    Till then,
    Adlina.

    10 good things about me.

[This post has been staying in the draft since 2017, now only I managed to update them all. Nevertheless, it's still hard to find the good in you compared to flaws, so I'm putting it here so I can reflect back whenever needed]

    Assalamualaikum and Hi,
Few weeks ago, I tried to list down 20 good things about me, but umm, I only wrote like 2 or 3. It's so easy to list down negative things about yourself (I can list 100 of them), yet it's so hardd to know what are your strength. So, I cut down the number from 20 to 10 (so lazy to think). Here they are

    1. I loveeeeee food and coookinggg!!
Cooking is like therapy for me. I'm not good at it but after a lot of practice, I improved a lot (not an expert yet, but still amazing). I love to try recipes of healthy cooking. My passion is more on that kind of meal because what we eat define who we are, and to maintain our health & shape. However I do try other recipes such as Malaysian food, Korean and etc. You can click here to view my recipe here.
Fun fact: I become so cranky if I'm hungry. And the key to my heart is via food :)

    2. I'm soo patient!
Sometimes I'm think I'm not but after thinking twice I know I am. I'm not a person who swears a lot when I'm angry or on a daily basis (I do but it's like one in a million year). If I'm disappointed or sad about something or someone, I will stay on the bed in my room until I feel better. Most of the time I will sleep and usually when I wake up the bad feelings have already gone. It is not easy for me to get angry but when I do, you and I both will regret it. I am very patient to wait for what I want, like stuffs or person. The only problem is, sometimes being too patient made my inner temper want to explode.

    3. A loyal person.
Yes I do. My circle is small and I love to keep it small. It will be easier to manage. For me the most important thing is to be loyal to your family, because it the end, family is the one that will never left. Friends will always be there for you but at one point they can't be the same like before (because of family, commitments and other stuffs). I'm so grateful all my friendship are low maintainance. We're busy living our own lives but always be there for each other when needed. My father said to me, do care for your friends but never overly attached. Overly attached will lead to disappointment. In love relationship, I can say I am very loyal. I've been in relationship for three times in my life. The third time is already 5 years now and I hope it will last forever.  The key to loyalty in all relationships is to always tolerate.  My relationship had failed after 7 years, and when that happened, I choose to let go nicely, despite the pain. Nevertheless, no matter how hard it is in the relationship, I never left, until I was left behind.

    4. I'm independent and responsible
Staying at boarding school since 13 has been making me and independent girl since then. I don't really like to burden anyone with my problems. I used my money (allowance from MARA) to pay for my bills and expenses. Besides, I also started a small business with my sister to gain extra income.
In my final year, I worked at the library at night as student helper not only to gain money, but also to discipline myself to stay in the library and study. The one and only thing I can't do is driving. I don't know why I'm so afraid to drive. Maybe because I am trauma because I used to be so clumsy before this. As I cannot drive, I always depend on other people to go anywhere. Whenever I'm in KL, Selangor or Penang, I definitely use public transport if I want to go anywhere alone/when my friends do not have car. I've tried everything like MRT, LRT, BRT, commuter, monorail and buses. I'm so thankful Uber and Grab exist because I use them a lot when I work before. Thank you to my friends too for driving me around! ❤
Now, as working adult, I tried a lot of new things and manage my own life. Travelling abroad with family and friends, finding jobs, move houses, and manage my financial. I'm nowhere near perfect, but I'm making progress, always.

    5. I work well under pressure.
Being the eldest child already gives me the pressure to do the best. Hence, I always work hard to achieve my goals since I was young. I think the point in my life where I start to be really strong to handle stress is when I started studying in Monash.
Although the university is in Malaysia, the education follows Australian system is applied here. For me, the Australian system is quite tough. 6 credits per subject, making it to be 144 credits throughout my degree. My schedules are packed with 2 or 3 lab sessions per week that also requires you to do lab report, many deadlines to catch up and you have to study at the same time, already trained me to handle pressure very well.

In my final year I decide to work in the library as student helper at night. I made a brave decision to do a research project for my elective unit. I really struggle a lot between studying, doing a project and working at the same time. I work so hard at that time and I am blessed with help from amazing people around me. In the end, I manage to graduate on time which is I think quite impossible at first, I did.

Now in working world, my current job is quite pressure because have to multitask, but so far I'm able to manage all the pressure for 2 years.

    6. A brave girl
I'm very proud of this one. As a person coming from Kedah, I'm took a big risk coming to KL for my studies. I always heard how KL is a scary place and you might be culture shock there. But Alhamdulillah it was smooth for me. I've been to different parts of KL and Selangor so far, it's been a very amazing journey for me. That's only one example. There are many risks in life that I took I my life that shaped me to be who I am today. And I'm so grateful for that. The brave Adlina Maisarah.

    7. High integrity
Another strong character of mine is high integrity. I'm the kind of person that always follow the book/what's right since young no matter how wrong it is. I will always stand for the right thing. That's the kind of person I am until I went to university, I started to be more flexible. I still hold on to my principles, but as long as it's not damaging to anyone, I still can tolerate.

    8. Adlina the Explorer
Having the Science trait in me makes me curious about everything. Therefore, I love to explore new things. I will challenge myself to dive in and learn about it until I can manage. Like now, I'm currently typing using the keyboard on mobile phone because typing by touch screen feels so different. I believe out there, there are many interesting stuffs for us to learn. If we open our heart to explore, we surely can manage it well.

    9. Reading is my lifeee
I really love reading so so much! I have passion for books since I was kid, but life was so hectic    and busy. When I went through breakup, it was turning point in my life where I started to read again. I never stopped ever since. Then I bought Kindle (you can read here), and I just continuously read. Start from 2021, I start doing notes of everything I read, because you will forget, so I want to keep notes where I can look through and always remember what I've read. You can read about all the books I've read here.

    10. I  will always improvise myself.
I'm a very imperfect person with many many flaws. However, I will try my best to be a better person that who I am before. Be it in career, life and relationships, I'm still improving. I accept critism no matter how painful it is to digest. Then I will reflect on myself and ways to improve. I guess that's the thing I love most about myself.

Woaaah, that's so hard to write. Like I said we are more prone to seeing our weakness than goodness. I guess it's a good thing because it reminds me everyone have their own strengths, which we always forgot. Soooo, Adlina Maisarah, you are doing good, so be kind to yourself.

    Till then,
    Adlina

Recipe : Made with love by Abah

    Assalamualaikum and Hi,

My Abah is not like other ordinary father. He is very unique in his own ways. One of his uniqueness is he loves to cook, and he takes control of our kitchen. Abah has been cooking for our family since I was little but what I can remember it was maybe since I was 11 or 12. Mama is also a great chef but yeah she is extremely happy if Abah wants to cook (so she can rest more and it means less work to do!). My Abah is a very particular chef,  he memorised every single step of the recipe such as how many grams, or how much to put. Usually in our culture, we just follow our instinct, or 'agak agak'. That does not apply to my dad because he is precise. Even when he wants to make drink, he has his own measurement. To make tea add seven spoon of sugar to a jug of water. And it works! I want to share two recipes of food I always ask him to make for me, mashed potatoes with gravy and sambal kicap (sweet spicy soy sauce). I'm always a big fan of potatoes! I can eat them all they everyday. Fried, boiled, mashed, baked but not raw..just give them to me I will eat them all. I remember when I was in boarding school and studying in Monash, I always ask him to make mashed potatoes for me. He often nag me saying it is easy to make blablabla (another uniqueness, he loves to nag). One day, I think after I already graduate, I watch him making mashed potatoes and gravy. And it is when I ask the recipe from him! I want to learn more from him because if one day if he is not around, I can always be with him through food. Same goes to my mom too. Okay, as for sambal kicap, it was the best one I've ever had too!!! We eat it with chicken soup, oxtail soup and soto. Ohh so yumm!!. These two are the best recipes ever from him.

    So here they are;

    Mashed potatoes with gravy

    Mashed potatoes:
    Potatoes, milk, and salt

    1. Boiled peeled potatoes with salt and some oil.
    2. Mashed the potatoes, add milk slowly until achieve consistency you desired. Add salt according to your taste.

    Gravy:
Leftover water from boiling potatoes, chicken stock, onions, soy sauce, black pepper, cornstarch, and salt.

    1. Using leftover water from boiling potatoes, add on 1 cubed chicken stock, black pepper and onions according to your taste.
    2. Once water is boiling, add in soy sauce for colour and salt as per your taste. Then add cornstarch until it thickens. After that, taste and adjust accordingly.

    Sambal kicap:
    10 green chilies
    2 spoon sugar
    1 clove garlic
    sweet soy sauce

    1. Crush chilies and garlic using chopper or pestle and mortar. Then add in sugar and sweet soy sauce. Mix until achieve desired consistency.

This recipe is so good to eat with fried tofu or soto, or just plain soup. For 2nd recipe, usually my sister will do it at home.

I think that's all for now.

    Till then,
    Adlina

    Kindle Paperwhite 4

    Assalamualaikum and Hi,

Today I want to write a review on my recent impulsive purchase (I can't stop thinking of it for 3 days as it's quite expensive but I need ittt so much), which is Kindle Paperwhite 4.

Since last year I followed many book lovers on Twitter and Instagram, as I started to develop love for reading again. So I encountered few people who are using Kindle to read. Initially I wanted to buy a tablet but after reading reviews about Kindle, I decided to buy one.

    Sooooooooo, why Kindle????

    1. It is only for reading and listening to audio book only
    - If I buy a tablet, I will definitely distracted by social media because tablet can do a lot of things other than reading.
    - With Kindle you will only read and listen to audio books.

    2. Kindle has E-Ink and anti glare technology
    - These features enable us to read in the dark or in the sunlight without having effects on our eyes.
    - E-Ink technology on the other hands, have the same colour as physical book. They still have lights but much better than phones or tablets.

    3. Minimizing and reducing screen time
    - This is the most serious issue I'm facing because I can't be separated from my phone and I'm addicted to social media. I like to scroll and scroll and never stop scrolling.
    - So I hope by having Kindle, I will still scrolling but I'm reading. So far for almost a week my screen time reduce a lot. I didn't spend much time looking at unnecessary stuffs.

    4. No large space needed to store books
    - I'm currently renting room and do not have a car, so it will be difficult for me if I want to move out someday. Furthermore, whenever I go somewhere, I always bring my books with me but end up not reading or wanting to read different books. So with Kindle, I can bring many books in 1 device, and I can read any book I want.

    5. Free books!!!
    - When I was learning how to download books into Kindle, I discovered website https://libgen.is/ where there are a lot of free books to be downloaded. Thus, I can read for freeee!

    6. Waterproof and long battery life
    - It is waterproof so I can use it in shower but I didn't anyway. I really like because it has long battery life. So far I only charge it twice since my purchase.

    7. Ebooks are cheaper
    - Basically Ebooks are the much more cheaper than physical books so it saves cost too.

When I first bought Kindle, I was afraid that I will not use it as I should, and did not know how to use it. After a while, I realize that the first step is to start doing it, and everything will fall into it's place. So far this is the best purchase I've ever made (besides Air Fryer). I hope I will consistently read books and gain knowledge to be a better person

I bought it from @rectandsquares on Instagram! They are also very helpful in helping you to choose

Overall, I think Kindle is one of the best purchases I've made. If you love to read, this is a good investment for you.

    Till then,
    Adlina

    Blessed

    Assalamualaikum and Hi,

Tonight, while I listened to Spotify and scrolled my Instagram, I looked at the pictures of everything I went through in my life for the past few years.

I was blessed. I really am. Very much. I've experience so many good things and met a lot of nice, amazing people in life. Everyone I've met was so kind to me and it made me wonder if I was good for them too.

Some people came and then left. But they left with good memories. And I feel so blessed with memories that keep me strong when I weak.

"Live in the moment", someone used to said this to me. I guess it is true. We don't guarantee to have tomorrow yet and yesterday have left, so we only have today.

Alhamdulillah for the blessings your Allah.

P/s: please pray for those who are affected by flood and Covid19. 2021 begins in hard way 😭

2020; a year of blessings in disguise

    Assalamualaikum and Hi,

2nd post of the year after long hiatus would be about 2020! Well when 2020 came, everyone was so excited.

"This year will finally be the most amazing year"
    "Flying cars!"
"We will travel and explore the world!"
    "Life will happen this year"

On end of January, Covid19 came to Malaysia and government decided to impose lockdown in March. And that's basically end of the year.

Basically my year went through so fast. I can't believe I'll make it through but I did anyway.

January - early March : super damn busy with work
March - June : MCO, WFH in Kedah, spending time with family
June - September - Going out a lot and work work work
Oct - Nov : Brokenhearted, WFH again and spending time with books
Dec : Still WFH and finally can go back to Kedah again

    Highlights of the year:
2020. The year of taking a break. Despite my busy schedule since end 2019 until March 2020, MCO gave my busy working life a pause. Very blessed when I'm able to spend those 3 months with my family in Kedah. A very risky but the best decision I've made.

2020. The year of loss. Losing a very close friend who decided to let us go. Losing time with family due to 2nd and 3rd wave Covid. Losing the freedom to see and travel the world I've been dreaming of. Losing the lover of so many years whom I thought will be my forever.

2020. The year to reconnect with Allah. For the last few months in 2020, after all the heartbreaks and tough times, I spend most of my time alone reading books and prayed to Allah. I take a break from worldly matter, be closer to Him and reflect back on my life.

Despite everything that happened, I still have a job that paid me well, a home to live in, food on the table, family that loves me, friends who care and hobbies that keep me occupied.

2021, may it be a better year for everyone. May all the pain will be removed and replaced will endless happiness and limitless growth. May everything will be eased, may my heart will be healed, hopefully doors to many opportunities will be opened and true love will be found ♥️ and may Allah guide me and stay with me every step of the way.

    The brokenhearted

    Assalamualaikum and Hi,

It's been 2 years since I last wrote here. Today I'm starting to write again but already going to start with a sappy post.

I want to write here because it is something I need to forget but it is part of my life journey too. Something I used to cherish and made me happy.

    To you,
For 7 years, we have been spending time and growing up together. You hold a special place in my heart, a place I thought will last forever. Never did I thought one day, you decided to walk away that way and never come back. It was nobody's fault. It was meant to happen sooner or later. For months I struggle to forgive and forget because it was unexpected and I didn't get a proper closure. And the journey to heal myself on my own, was not easy. A journey I don't want to go through again. I'm grateful my family and friends are always there to support me. Most of all, I thank Allah for always always give me strength when I was at my weakest.

    To you,
Thank you for everything. For all the memories and love. We might not have forever together, but I'm thankful for all the things we went through with each other.

And today, on the last day of 2020, I will leave all of the feelings, memories and bury them away to begin a new journey. May this broken heart will be healed and learn to love again someday ♥️
